Welcome back to the show. Today we have part two of my guests’ interview with Michelle Byrd over at the Busy Vibrant Mom podcast, she appeals to Christian stay-at-home moms. And so she has tons of productivity hacks, time blocking parenting solutions. To experience more vibrancy in everyday life as you’re feeling like you’re drowning in laundry and putting yourself last, go head over to Michelle’s podcast for just a little more joy, vibrancy, and energy in your day. So this is part two, again of my interview with her and we’re talking all things essential oils and fall health and wellness. And so today is part two, this is three easy essential oil health hacks for busy moms, plus my top three oils for immune support. Did you know that certain pure essential oil blends are highly beneficial to your health for this time of year? Yes, they are. And so for you to achieve the full health effects of essential oils, you can get them in you around you or on you which is awesome. I go through this in detail, listening to learn the importance of working with a tested and verified brand before consuming any essential oils.
This is so so so important because synthetic adulterated essential oils will either produce a no biological response in the body or they will have a negative response in the body.
And we do not want that. So tune in!
But before we get into all of that, if you don’t yet have access to pure, potent and medicinal quality essential oils, and I want to make sure you know how you can work with me. The first way, of course, is to go to my website, heidibramm.com and click on essential oils to get immediate access to my 45-minute essential oils made easy virtual workshop. This was designed for people who are just starting to explore the potential of essential oils for health and wellness and don’t know where to start. It can be overwhelming, right? There are so many different sources. I have people tell me “Oh, my oils, I don’t even know what to do with them” because they don’t have someone to guide them, and teach them and help them learn how to use essential oils. So this is actually just a basic workshop. It’s not an extensive training on any particular topic. But my goal simply is to educate and empower you with the basics to help you understand the power of essential oils because I know it just looks like water. You think, “how can these even do anything?” But they can trust me!
We love our oils, they have become a go-to in our home for almost the last decade as a first-line of defense. And I want to make sure that everybody knows they exist as a safer, cheaper, and more effective option. Because there was a time I didn’t know that they existed. And so I was turning to caffeine, and alcohol, and sugar to give me energy throughout the day. And little did I know I could just use peppermint and frankincense and wild orange and that would have helped me have energy and not have those negative side effects from those stimulants.
So in this wellness workshop, we cover what essential oils are and how to use them, what to look for in a quality essential oil and why it matters. And then we cover a few of the most popular and versatile oils every home should have along with testimonials. So you can make an informed decision on whether or not essential oils are a good fit for you and your family. And if you decide to work with me, you will get your oils at a 25% discount.
So go to heidibramm.com today, click on essential oils and get immediate access.
The other thing I want to make sure you know about and this is a limited-time offer. We’re only doing this during the month of October. I have a Facebook group that’s active the entire month, and every single day we’re dripping one drip of one oil, and there are testimonials and stories. And so you’re going to get to hear firsthand from people who have loved their oils and used them for years, how they’re using them, what are they noticing, what effects they are having. What testimonials and stories are they sharing? And these stories, you guys I’m telling you, they will knock your socks off.
So I have a private Facebook group that you can join. Just message me at support@coveredbeloved.com, and I will personally send you the link to get into that. Again, it’s only available this month, we’re doing a daily giveaway every day of the week as well. So you’re going to be able to have a chance to win free oils. And we are having a limited offer of a Special Education Week, October 18th through the 22nd. It’s Monday through Friday, and we are focusing in on one specific area of health each and every single day.
We’ll have a live introduction of the basics of essential oils with again, a unique focus for that particular day on one of the five areas of wellness, and then we’ll close out each session with an option for you to get oils of your own in your home. So what are the different topics? If I had an education opportunity for you on essential oils in respiratory health, would you be interested in that? Yes, of course! So we’re covering that on Monday, October 18th. Tuesday will be essential oils and sleep wellness. Wednesday will be Relief: so, like pain, discomfort and all that good stuff with essential oils. Thursday will be mind and mood so are you stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, right? These are going to be all about essential oils to help with mind and mood. And then finally Friday we’re going to land on essential oils and immunity. Something everybody in my community is ramping up on right now.
I cannot share these links publicly but if you message me at support@coveredbeloved.com I will make sure you get access to these. Again they will be October 18th through the 22nd. They’re at 9am Mountain Time/10am Central time. There will be a 24 hour replay option available for you. If you perhaps cannot make it at that time, you will have 24 hours to watch the session before it’s gone. So please message me, I would love to help you get oils in your home.
Speaker 2:
So, how long have you been using essential oils? And what do you really like about them? You touched a little bit. But how did you just get into using essential oils?
Speaker 1:
Yeah, this is such a fun question. Because right now, like, I couldn’t even imagine my life without them. And so I have to think back like, man, what did we do before but a little bit about me. I used to get super stressed out in the morning when my kids would get ready for school. These are my older two. So they went to public school and I would just yell at them and they would get so distracted. And then we go into school, I actually got to the point where I would I trained my body to get like a panic attack. Like I felt this panicky feeling because we were late. The principal, actually, I feel like maybe shouldn’t have been a principal because she was like, she would hunt us down in the hallway. And be like, You need to get a pink slip, like oh my gosh. And then one time, she wouldn’t let me bring the pink slip to the teacher, she made my kid do it. Like oh my gosh, you know, this walk of shame. But I would get really stressed out and I was like that wigged-out, stressed-out mom, right? Who’s yelling at her kids all morning. But my own personal experience with essential oils started with a calming blend. And it just as the name implies, that helped me be a better mom and a nicer mom in the morning trying to get my kids to school on time.
And I noticed that I had this amazing ability to respond versus react out of anger or like, snap anger at my kids. I could let the little things slide and not bother me as much. And I could sleep better at night and of course sleeping better at night made for better days as you can imagine. And so that’s how I was introduced to the power of essential oils and what they could do for me. It took me about a week to have that panicky feeling subside, and it wasn’t triggered by any of the events anymore to lead to that panic. It was just like, okay, you know, once I can come down from that panicky state I was able to like reorganize my brain and be like, “Okay, what do we need to change? What do we need to do differently?”
But I was kind of, like in survival mode. So it just helped me snap out of that. But a little bit more of my backstory. My husband and I, we’ve been together for 23 years, and we are over 16 years into our natural health journey. Now, again, because we started paying attention to what we put in and around us when our second daughter was born. By the time she was age three, she was determined to be gluten intolerant. And so again, we were forced to read the labels on everything. And that’s one surefire way to empower a mom is to have her advocate for her kids. So four years after we found out she was gluten intolerant, she’s about seven at the time, I was introduced to essential oils at the nutrition and chiropractic clinic I worked for at the time.
So of course you know reading the labels seeking out the best. And we’ve been using essential oils ever since that was in 2012. So we use them every day. We use them as much for just preventative care as we do for emergencies, mood support. Anything minor we would have previously gone into a clinic for I can, I can do it at home, it makes me happy when not when my daughter wakes me up at 2 am. But when I can quick run to my kitchen, grab an oil, and just apply it topically and I can take care of that right away. I’m not against modern, you know medical care and emergency care, but about 80% of what we have going on in the home we can now handle at home. So that’s kind of how that all started. And yeah, I’m just super passionate about empowering people in their homes.
Speaker 2:
I think that’s amazing. I know our kids. As I said, two of the boys have had sore throats currently. I think they got it from a birthday party they were at last weekend. And then one of them just last night was saying “Oh my stomach hurts” and it would have been nice to know like, “Okay, what kind of oil can I apply to your stomach that might just make you a little bit more comfortable while you sleep?” Like he wasn’t gonna throw up. He just had like some butterflies in his tummy and I thought “what could I do?” Do as a mom, you feel kind of helpless, like, “what can I do to just help you and make you more soothed and comfortable so that you can sleep better?” I think that’s huge. It’s just like a little thing like, “How can I help treat this for you?” I know, it’s not something we need to go to the emergency room for, or, you know, it’s not a big deal, but that it would just make you more comfortable.
Speaker 1:
Mm-hmm. Yeah. And there’s a lot of different options. You know, like experiments, a good one, peppermint, cardamom, ginger, it, there are blends out there, they’re already pre-made for digestive support. And so our kids have their go-to is, you know, every child’s a little bit different, everybody’s body’s a little bit different. But there are generally those categories that are pretty good for that specific thing. So those would be my recommendations.
Speaker 2:
That’s awesome. Now with oils, I feel like that you were like, Oh, by the top, off the top, my head here are like three different options. I feel so overwhelmed. I think it is with essential oils of just knowing which ones to use for what, do you have any hacks or tips to make it easier and kind of more approachable to using oils?
Speaker 1:
Yeah, for sure. And I, I’ve definitely been there, I felt that way too in the beginning. Again, I’ve been doing this for over almost over a decade. So if you’re new to the essential oil world, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. I was new once too. And I still feel new at times, even though I’ve been using them for so long. But I just keep learning new and amazing things about them. And they do, they have endless capabilities. I’m surprised all the time of the results that I still get on a daily basis. And within essential oil is if you’re using a pure one. I think I’ll talk about that in a little bit here. But you can’t really go wrong like you’re always doing something positive for your body. And you might be surprised, oh, I had wild orange and frankincense on hand. And that’s all I had, but actually had a headache. And I put it on and it worked. You know. So they’re very versatile. They’re, they can be used for a lot of different things. So while there are like these actual clinical approaches to using essential oils, and the company I love has established its value in this clinical area, I’ll just talk a little bit about this.
Because this is kind of important. I feel like if we’re not having a conversation about purity, then we shouldn’t be having a conversation about essential oils because it’s that important. And so having an essential oil company that you work with that has with withstood the scientific scrutiny, and this the consistency and the purity and the effectiveness, right? That is huge because you’re putting these on your kids and your babies, right. But there’s a different value and purpose when we as moms decide to use them in our homes. And as long as you’re okay with trying new things. It’s like anything, right, there’s a little bit of a learning curve, you’re going to learn as you go. You can benefit from using essential oils. In my community, we do a lot of education opportunities. And so we never want anyone’s collection of oils just sitting in their drawer at home not getting used and collecting dust.
And so whether you’re new or not, I’m going to share my top three hacks for using essential oils. But this comes from my free 45-minute essential oils made easy virtual workshop. And so you can find that on my website at heidibramm.com. There’s two M’s like in Mary. And it revolves around how to use them in on and around you. So the hacks I’m about to share only pertain to the quality of essential oil I would refer to as a medicinal or a pharmaceutical quality. There’s really no regulating or governing body when it comes to essential oils. And so you really have to rely on the company and their claims. You have to know where your essential oils are coming from because 80 to 90% of the essential oils on the market are adulterated or synthetic. And in my opinion, that is criminal. It’s cheaper for them to use a synthetic. You know, the more raw material you have in your own product, the more expensive it’s going to be. And so I don’t want anyone using toxic essential oils in any of these ways I’m about to share. So that’s kind of my disclaimer. But if you look at, you know, working with essential oils, the three hacks are summed up in one sentence.
Okay, so this is my biggest hack, I’m going to break it down, get them in, on, and around you a couple of times a day. That’s it in and around you. So those are the three things, that’s a great place to start.
1. GET THEM AROUND YOU
And so that the first hack is to get them around you. Everyone humor me for a minute. And if you can drive one-handed, take your pointer finger and your thumb of the other hand and pinch right above the bridge of your nose. Okay, got it. So right under that right under your fingers, that’s your olfactory nerve. And so you can take your fingers off now because everyone staring at you like what is that person doing? But this nerve sends messages to our brain, which in turn sends messages to our entire body. Sometimes people think it’s hokey to say that oils can affect the body just by smelling them, but that’s why it’s called aromatherapy, right?
They’ve studied this. And so as an example, when you go to the dentist and they need to sedate you, they used to do this, I don’t know if they still do, but they would put laughing gas, right? and ask you to breathe through the mask, because it affects that olfactory system. So in as little as 30 seconds of breathing in the compounds through the mask, that gas triggers that olfactory nerve, and it sends the signals to your body to help you relax, and even feel euphoric. And so that’s actually the fastest way to access the brain. And so this happens exact same way with natural compounds found in essential oils. So when we breathe in these compounds in oils, they hit that olfactory nerve, that that part of the brain, right, that sends signals to the body. And this can also happen in as little as 30 seconds with essential oils. So there are a few ways to use oils around you like aromatically, you can put a drop in your palm and rub them together and just keep your hands over your nose and you can inhale deeply, you can use a few drops in a diffuser that’s going to disperse, it’s going to mix the oil with water. And that’s going to burst like this ultra fineness, with essential oils into the air. Or you can just breathe them right from the bottle. So this is great to do if you’re stressed. Wild Orange is a good one for that, you can do this with like an immune blend that I’ll share with you kind of what’s in my favorite ones. But this is going to help purify the air. Even if you’re having respiratory issues, it’s going to help open up the lungs, right because it’s going to affect the air around you. And so this is a great way to affect the entire space, everyone in the room is basically benefiting because they’re breathing in. And it’s also helping destroy those airborne pathogens. So getting them around you, it’s probably the easiest way.
2. GET THEM AROUND YOU
And that’s my first hack, the second one is getting on you. So you can actually apply some oils directly to the skin. The biggest safety concern here is skin sensitivity. So I recommend you dilute your essential oils with a carrier oil, like a liquid coconut oil or jojoba oil that is just as effective. And it helps your oils last longer. And so you can apply these topically on your kids. And if you’re taking a bath, if you’re having your kids take a bath, you can mix your oils with Epsom salts. And so use that as a carrier and then add that mixture to the water. If you don’t do that, the oils in the water are going to separate and it probably isn’t gonna feel the greatest.
So we don’t want that to happen. We want to use a carrier in the bath too. So I’ll do that sometimes when my kids are, you know having a little gunky, you heard of steam baths, right steam showers, you turn on the Steam or whatever, let it you can do that too. You can put an oil on the bath and just have your kids kind of sit in the in the steamy room. But with oils topically, you can put it where it hurts, or if you’re not sure you can put it on the bottoms of your feet. This is great, especially for kids because they tend to have more sensitive skin. And so the bottoms of the feet are the least sensitive areas of the body.
Just make sure yeah, that you’re keeping it away from their eyes. You don’t want to put oils in your ears or any crevices shouldn’t be in. But for anything like you know dry skin, or rashes, or joint or knee pain or headaches, you would just take one or two drops, mix it with a little bit of that carrier oil, that liquid coconut oil, and just apply it directly to the area of concern. I’m also a huge fan of layering my essential oils. So I mentioned layering protocols on the spine. And so we have a book that literally tells us what oils to use for immunity, for emotional support, for respiratory, you know, for hormones, for detox. It’s got a bunch of them in there. And so yeah, I do that one that I do every week, just kind of during the winter months to keep them healthy and strong. So my second hack is to get them on you.
3. GET THEM IN YOU
Okay, so we did get them around you get them on you and the third one is to get them in you and have to go back to my disclaimer, right I would only ever use a pure oil this way because it will be talked about earlier with most oils being adulterated or synthetic, but those oils that can be safely ingested as a dietary supplement. They will be sourced purely and quality tested for potency, and they will have third-party validation to prove it so they will have a nutrition fact label on the bottle.
And here’s the thing: I know this is kind of controversial and I have an entire presentation on internal uses. But just because I do it doesn’t mean that you have to do it. You can just stick with topical or aromatic but a pure high-quality essential oil will have been verified, biologically effective by an independent University. And so, basically what that means is they have made sure that the essential oils are effective and increase a positive response in the body versus stopping or inhibiting you know pathways that should have been activated which would suggest adulteration, synthetic or adulterated oils will either produce no biological response in the body or they will have a negative response in the body. So I suggest working with a brand that you can trust, you know, something that’s been tested and verified. And even though you might not be able to tell the difference your body can and so you want to make sure you’re getting that gold standard.
Speaker 2:
Right, you can probably tell a difference with how you feel afterward to if you’re, how your body is reacting to the pure kind of one that hasn’t been adulterated versus one, which has clearly been added synthetics and so forth.
Speaker 1:
Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah, it’s pretty common in the industry. So you want to make sure you’re getting what is going to be beneficial. The one with the most about health benefits, basically, I mean, cuz that’s why you’re doing it right?
But my third hack is to get them in you. And so this is especially helpful in acute situations when you’re having any digestive concerns. And you’re experiencing nausea or stomach ache, or having heartburn issues, or maybe allergies, you know, like seasonal allergies or immune concerns. And so you can take one to two drops of essential oil, and you can put it in a glass of water and gargle with it, you can put it in the milk or a bit of honey on a spoon. I’ve done this with my kids. We’ll make like a little cough syrup with just honey and lemon and lavender. I do a little bit of peppermint. Peppermint can be kind of strong. And so they’ll just, you know, use that as like cough syrup.
If you don’t want to taste it, some of them don’t taste the greatest and we’re not really taking them for the taste, right, we’re taking them for the health benefits. But you can put your oils in an empty veggie capsule. You can actually buy those empty, open it up, put your oils in. I like to put a little bit of liquid omega or olive oil in my capsules, like as a carrier oil, and then you would just swallow that like you would a pill.
For sore throats we mentioned, you know, gargling, you can put one to two drops in a shot glass of water, and then have a gargle and swallow. So those are my three hacks getting them in, on, and around you. And if you’re just starting out, or you get easily overwhelmed, and so you have a collection of oils, I would pick three. Just pick three oils to start this way of getting them in, on, and around you.
Most people I work with get a medium-sized collection of oils. So they have a good variety of things to pick from. But some good options that most people have already kind of in their home apothecary kits would be lemon, lavender, and peppermint. I actually have a PDF that shows 101 things you can do with just these three oils. So even a lot with three oils, it’s a great place to start. But pertaining to the topic at hand, if I were to start with just one, then I would recommend a blend of immune oils that’s already premixed for you, so you don’t have to mix them up yourself.
Blends are great because there’s a synergy to them, and the oils in there complement each other. So there are a few great options. If anybody wants any recommendations, you can reach out to me but for immune blends. I would say you know, I love the ones that would at least have cinnamon, clove, and some sort of citrus oil like wild orange. The rest of the oils in the blend may vary. But I would say those three are super important, I’ll tell you why. But you could just add a few drops of that immune blend to your diffuser to purify the air. And again, eliminate those airborne pathogens. And you’re going to have that diffuser in your main areas right where you spend the most time where your family kind of hangs out. So probably the kitchen, living room, dining room, this diffuser is going to disperse those oils, aromatically and everyone’s going to benefit so it’s getting it around you.
Next, you can get on you, you can take one or two drops of that same blend, dilute it with some sort of carrier oil, like the coconut oil or, or the whole jojoba oil. And you can put it on the bottoms of your feet and along your spine at night. You’re getting it on you. This is going to aid in the circulation of blood, it’s going to help stimulate that immune system and create a very unfriendly environment for any bacteria or viruses that wouldn’t that won’t be able to thrive. So the reason I love clove is because it’s super high in antioxidants. So remember those good guys I talked about? It’s off the charts. In fact, I don’t know if anyone’s heard of the ORAC scale, but it measures the antioxidant capacity of different foods. And so just to kind of give you some examples, blueberries, right, we’re all familiar blueberries, they score 2500 On this scale, carrot score 250 and clove essential oils scores over 1 million.
Speaker 2:
Wow. That’s an incredible jump!
Speaker 1:
I know. So you think, like, “oh, eating blueberries and carrots.” Right? Well, how about just putting a little bit of clove oil with you don’t have to. You don’t even have to do a full drop with a carrier. It’s a hot one. It’s a spicy one. And then yeah, it’s the highest-scoring single ingredient ever tested for its antioxidant capacity on that ORAC scale.
Speaker 2:
Just incredible. Like that’s such a big jump. It’s not just like oh by a little
Speaker 1:
Right? So it’s very, very effective against bacteria and viruses. Wild Orange helps boost the immune system and support the cells. So that is high in a compound called limonene. It’s been shown to naturally support the body and production of glutathione. Now, maybe you’ve been hearing a lot about glutathione lately with the current health situation. And for good reason. Glutathione is one of the most critical antioxidants and every single cell in your body is dependent on it for cellular protection. A lot of us are deficient. Some areas like the liver, colon, and brain are often deficient. And it’s critical for supporting the body’s immune system. So they’ve actually shown that people, I want to say maybe it’s like a third of the population. I’m not sure my exact numbers, but a lot of people can’t even effectively create glutathione in their bodies. And so they have higher rates of, you know, serious illness and death from the current respiratory infection when they have low levels of glutathione. So I’m not giving medical advice, or saying that wild orange is a cure, but I’m saying that everyone can benefit from a little wild orange to stimulate their immune system. And it’s also great for reducing stress.
Speaker 2:
That’s so easy, just to be like, Okay, fine, just use a wild orange. Let’s see if this helps. It helps my body out and helps my kiddos out. It’s not a too big of a step.
Speaker 1:
Yeah. So there’s clove, wild orange. And then the last one I want to talk about was cinnamon. Because it’s a spicy oil. Again, it’s a hot oil, you’re gonna want to definitely dilute any oil that’s like, you know, Cassia, clove, cinnamon, those are hot oils. But cinnamon creates conditions where unfriendly viruses and bacteria cannot thrive. And so the most important function that they perform is that they can clean the receptor sites on oru cells. So our cells talk to each other, right? Without clean receptor sites, they can’t communicate. And the body malfunctions, and then we get sick, we don’t want that. So I can think of my three oils together, right, clove, wild orange, and cinnamon. And probably maybe if you want to add eucalyptus for respiratory or rosemary for cellular. There are blends already pre-made for you, you don’t have to think about this. This is just why I like these three, at least in an immune blend, because they’re powerful. And then you can dilute it on the bottoms of feet at night. And you can kind of get that holiday smell this time of year while getting an immune boost at the same time. But this is one, I would put a drop in water and gargle if I had a sore throat. And my kids will do that as well. I probably start, now, I am like, I would, I feel safer using essential oil with my kids. And I do an over-the-counter. I’m just that type of person.
Speaker 2:
Let’s put a drop in water. And have you go with it?
Speaker 1:
I do this pretty young with my kids maybe like five or six. So it depends on you know, if it’s like, with my four-year-old, I have made her the cough suppressant like the cough syrup with the lemon and the lavender. And she didn’t like the peppermint. So I just I’m like, Okay, well, she doesn’t like peppermint. So I just do lemon, lemon, and lavender with honey. And so she’ll do that just to kind of help calm the cough. But yes, I do use oils internally with my children. But one of my members in my community, she has a compromised immune system because of having to take immunosuppressants. But she said 100% healthy so far this past season, thanks to the immune blend, and the oil supplements and probiotics I mentioned earlier. So it’s awesome that you can you can do both, you know? Yeah, modern medicine if you have to. And then you can support even maybe what that modern medicine is having, like a side effect, right? It’s suppressing her immune system, but she’s able to counteract that.
Speaker 2:
I think it’s super helpful. Because over time, as you’ve said, you slowly are understanding essential oils a little bit more, is hard to just jump into the deep end to the pool. So as you’re using some modern medicine, let’s say and then you start to use a couple of different blends and a couple different things. And you’re like, Okay, this is helping this is working. Let me see what else would help and work. You’re kind of like working yourself in, versus and still using some modern medicine but slowly replacing that or slowly, you know, walking through those steps.
Speaker 1:
Yeah, definitely. Yeah, I mean, there’s no right or wrong, you know, black or white at all. And our first kind of introduction to more natural products was I don’t know if anyone remembers this, it was called Head-On. And so you’d rub it on for a headache, you’d rub it on your head and it was like this little stick that had, you know, some sort of probably essential oils or something in it, you know, and so we would use that and that was before I even knew about essential oils. And so same idea you know, you’re taking one thing and not just kind of using that for a while. I’m not going to go to that for I’m gonna use this other thing for a little bit. But yeah, great. I love it
