As a listener of the show, you know that my goal is to educate and empower you to be the solutions provider in your home and I’m here to walk with you on this journey. So today we are talking about using essential oils to help you live your best life during summer and help you fix all things itchy, oozing, bleeding, wishing, hurting swelling, peeling, throbbing, crying and more. So these are my top 10 essential oils you must have in your first aid travel kit.
Alright, let’s go through what we are using these oils for. So the first thing that we come across when we’re camping, vacationing is stings. So this could be bee stings, hornet stings horseflies, deer flies, wasps. Okay, so first things first, and again, I am not a doctor. So this is all educational and information. That’s my disclaimer, but you want to remove the sting. If that’s in place, just scrape it out with the edge of a plastic card. And then you’re going to combine two drops of Roman chamomile with baking soda and a little bit, just a little bit of water, a couple of drops, and this is going to make a paste and you can just put that paste right on the location. If you don’t have baking soda or water, that’s totally fine. You can just put a drop of Roman chamomile right on the site. Helichrysum is also really great for this. I like to use either one. So both of those oils are great options.
Number two for bleeding. Okay, minor bleeding, obviously, if it’s something crazy, go to the emergency room. But you can use Helichrysum, so again, I mentioned Helichrysum is great for all things blood. It helps to relieve that bleeding, and it has properties in there for that. So you can just add a drop or two of Helichrysum right on the site where it’s bleeding and just apply a small amount of pressure. Alright, next one is blisters. Oh my goodness, do not take a new pair of sandals with you when you’re on vacation and you’re going to be walking a ton. My girls do this. So if they happen to get a blister, you can use a drop of lavender essential oil on it and you can just do this a couple times a day. That’s going to be great for soothing and taking down the pressure of that and just helping it to recover.
Alright, next we have bug bites. So this would be like for anything itchy or irritating or swelling. You can use either lavender or basil. These are both really great options for bug bites, they help to get that itch out. And so you can just use a drop right directly on that to help relieve the itch and the irritation. Next would be burns. So obviously this would be for minor burns, anything major you’re going to make sure you go in and get that taken care of. But a couple options here you can use tea tree, frankincense and lavender, you can use each of these individually. I like to use lavender. Frankincense is really great as well. And so you can just put one to two drops on that area and cover it with you know, just a cloth for a little while. Lavender, it’s amazing how even that by the next day, you can see where maybe you had a burn in the kitchen and you drop some hot water on it or something. We actually had a friend that whose child grabbed a curling iron, and so just putting lavender on that and then the next day you can tell kind of where it affected them but there was no blistering there was no you know pussing or swelling or anything like that it just completely calmed that area. So this is great for sunburns too, and just to get a little bit relief if you were overexposed. You can mix lavender and frankincense and tea tree together in a spray spritzer bottle with a little bit of aloe and use that just on your sunburn areas.
Alright, next would be chapped lips. So you can take lavender with just like a natural oil that you might have maybe of coconut oil and apply that on your lips as needed. Next would be Charley horses or cramps. So if you are not used to being active and then you go on vacation, this is where your muscles start to speak to you. And so you can take marjoram and peppermint and frankincense too. So these are all going to be great for inflammation, great for pain, it’s going to create that nice soothing sensation and you can apply that over the cramping area and just gently massage it over your muscles.
Next we have scrapes and cuts. So this would be for minor scrapes and cuts but you can put a drop of Helichrysum on a cut to help stop the bleeding and then you can follow that with lavender and tea tree and basil. And this is just going to kind of help wash that area if you have a washcloth and can use some water and just kind of clean that area or if you can just you know kind of pour the water over it and use that to wash around the cut. Put your essential oils on and you’ll be amazed at how fast your skin will repair and recover from that.
Alright, next we have diarrhea. So sometimes we can get a little uncomfortable especially if we’re in a new area that we’re vacationing to and eating foods we are not used to, drinking water we’re not used to and so you can just take two drops of peppermint oil and roll that over the abdominal area. You can use a carrier oil with this just to kind of help spread the oil out and have it last longer. Or you can do if you have a quality that is approved to use for internal use. You can do one drop under the tongue.
Alright, next is energy and so yay energy! Parents need more energy on vacation, right? We often get worn out faster than the kids do. And so you can just put a drop of peppermint in your palms and inhale directly from your palms by cupping them over your nose. Alternatively, you can add a drop of peppermint to your water and drink, just to kind of help with that stamina, or if you’re just feeling fatigued, and you have a spray bottle handy, you can just put water in there with peppermint and use that as a spritzer to kind of just help yourself cool down and get that burst of energy. Alright, peppermint also works for fainting. So if you have someone that has fainted, grab your peppermint bottle and just kind of waft it underneath their nose until they recover. That’s a good option. Peppermints also good for high temperatures. So if anybody’s struggling with fever, you can mix peppermint even with Eucalyptus. Just moisten washcloth with water and use it to sponge the forehead, the back of the neck and the feet.
Alright, who doesn’t get a headache when they’re traveling? Long days, dehydrated, kids making tons of noise, you probably have a headache. My favorite combination is layering one drop each of lavender, and then frankincense, and then peppermint, so you’re layering them on top of each other, on your temples, forehead, back of neck and just letting those oils sink and do their work. So having peppermint go on last peppermint actually has these really cool properties were almost acts as a driver. And so it’s gonna drive those other layered essential oils on even faster. Alright, next we have inflammation. So if anyone’s had an injury of any sort, frankincense and lavender are great for calming inflammation, so is marjoram. You can mix two to three drops of each of those in a bowl of cold water again, using a damp washcloth with the water and holding it on that location. Alternatively, if you don’t have water, you can apply it to oils directly on your skin.
Alright, let’s see motion sickness. Oh my goodness, I do not travel well. I have to be either driving or in the front seat and I can’t even look at my phone. Oftentimes, I have to be directly looking straight ahead. And so if you or anybody in your family gets this while traveling, I totally sympathize and relate. I literally cannot go on a ferris wheel without my oils because of motion sickness. So you can use peppermint. Peppermint is great for this. And you can just inhale it right from the bottle as you pop the top off. Again, you can put a drop in your palms, rub your hands, cup your hands over your nose and inhale. You can diffuse this if you have a car diffuser and everybody is affected by it. Not only is this going to help keep people awake and refreshed, but they’re going to not have as much issue with that motion sickness.
Alright, how about a nosebleed? I don’t know about you, but with temperature changes and even altitude changes will oftentimes have something affected in this area. One time, were vacationing in Florida, and just the temperature between the outside air and the pool water gave me a bloody nose. So you can put a drop of Helichrysum over the bridge of your nose. And that should help stop the bleeding. Believe it or not, it’s amazing for that.
Alright, Poison Oak or Poison Ivy.Look up what these things look like before you go and you travel so that you know what you’re dealing with and what you’re looking out for. But if itching or redness appears, you can combine baking soda about a half a teaspoon with two drops of Roman chamomile and about 10 drops of water and just make a paste with that and put it over the affected area. And then you can just let that dry. And the cool thing with essential oils is that you can keep using them if you need more relief, and so you can reapply as often as you need to.
Alright, those are the solutions that I have for you just to kind of help with first aid, whether it’s for you know, somebody in your group or somebody else that you come across your path. Obviously for serious conditions or injuries you should follow first aid with treatment from qualified medical professionals. This is just a quick reference to give you the support that your body needs during minor emergencies and as you are on the go with your family.
So of course you know I love to share my testimonials. I have one from another mama in our group. She says, “I use Roman Chamomile to take the angry out of bee stings and Helichrysum works great too.” Yes, I totally agree with that! And then another mom says, :I use lavender mixed with tea tree oil for cuts and scrapes. It’s amazing how fast things hea!” And then finally we have, “I use lavender and water in a small spritz bottle for sunburns. I use it as frequently as the skin is dry and this usually takes the burn out within 24 to 36 hours and I have nearly no peeling. This is the best kept secret that shouldn’t be!”
