Hey beloved, Welcome back to the show! In today’s episode we are covering Chapter 6 in the Full book: by Asherita Ciuciu. Food, Jesus and the battle for satisfaction. I’m going to share key highlights from this chapter on How Feasting on God’s Word Daily Helps Us Grow and Nourishes Our Soul. Just like seeds need water, sunlight, and soil to grow, we need the Holy Spirit, Jesus, and God’s word to do the same. True satisfaction and nourishment can only be found in God’s word and not in food cravings.
In this episode, I explain how the word of God can lead us to desire Him more than food and how we can continuously feed ourselves that word. Listen in to learn the 2 ways you can shift your attention from food obsession to the word of God.
I will also be sharing my personal takeaways from when I went through this book in 2019. This POWERFUL book changed my life so much that I chose it for the 12 week curriculum for my breakthrough program, the Biblical Weight Loss Blueprint. To truly give you weapons for weight loss that work for lasting freedom. To help you renew your mind, to make you wise to the enemy’s tactics so you can armor up and stand against schemes, and to help you trade guilt for grace in your relationship with food.
I am on a mission to bring a whole new level of health and wellness to your home and help women of faith heal their relationship with food, restore their identity in Christ, and lose toxic weight for good.
My story and my struggles with emotional eating and weight gain started when I was about 9 years old when my parents separated. I share about my journey of gaining and losing the same 40-60lbs on episode #52. This healing process and this journey toward freedom with food is not an overnight gig. Some pieces take years to heal and then some after years of struggle are healed and delivered in an instant, like my come to Jesus moment in the bathtub with alcohol which I shared in episode #57.
But first, I want to let you know what’s coming on November 28th, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and also what’s launching in Jan 2022.
Do you feel overwhelmed when it comes to food?
Have you ever felt stuck in a seemingly endless cycle of overeating, yo-yo dieting, and obsessive thoughts about food or your body image?
Do you look to the scale to determine your self-worth?
Oh my gosh, I’m so excited beloved! I’m doing a “Food Freedom Workshop” and you’re invited! We’re going to spend 1 hr together unpacking what it really takes to break free from bondages to food and struggles with weight — w/o exercise and even if you’ve struggled your entire life!
For many of us, food has become an increasingly complex issue that causes us to feel guilty, overwhelmed, or even hopeless. If you feel defeated by your lack of self-control or overwhelmed by your weight, and thoughts and longings for food, then come join us in the Biblical Weight Loss Blueprint Facebook group on FB Sunday, Nov 28th at 7:30pm CST as we dig into Scripture and reveal the path to freedom.
I’ll be covering the top 3 mistakes that I see people make when trying to lose weight and this workshop will also give you a glimpse into the food-freedom curriculum that we use in my Biblical Weight Loss Blueprint, which is my 12 week signature program that I’m launching January 2022. It’s a faith-based format, and it’s comprehensive, it’s holistic in nature. We are body, spirit, soul so in this program we address all three with a guided fast and detox for the physical weight loss portion, a biblically based food freedom curriculum for the spiritual piece, and finally personal inner healing sessions for the heart & soul work that’s so crucial for lasting freedom. A strand of 3 cords is not easily broken and this program has it all!
Weight is just a symptom. It’s not about the weight, and yet it’s not NOT about the weight. It’s about so much more than weight but we know that the weight is “in the way” so to speak of us truly living our lives to the full.
Losing the weight is really just the icing on the cake in this program since yes you will be losing between 10-15% of your body weight, which for most people is about 20-25lbs, but more importantly you will discover the joy of living free from food fixation by experiencing deeper satisfaction in Christ, you will find healing from the inside out and that you no longer NEED to carry this extra weight around because you’ve found true healing, and you will finally feel comfortable + confident in your own skin and be able to step into the fullness of what God has for you. So come join me for this totally free “Food-Freedom workshop” that I am doing for you. This is a spiritual battle y’all. We need to overcome the lies with truth. I will even have a special guest join us to share her experiences from the 12 week program so you can hear first hand her results and her takeaways. AND workshop attendees will get first dibs on applying for the beta version of this program that launches in Jan.
If you are ashamed to workout in front of others…
Can’t stop obsessing about food…
Or can’t stop binge eating or drinking…
If you avoid the mirror because of what you see in the reflection…
If you are stuck in a cycle of shame and self hatred with your body, or overcome by fear and anxiety in social settings…
Or using food to cope and numb the pain of the past, or when you can’t handle the everyday..
And your soul yearning to be set free from the bondage of food fixation, binge eating, loneliness, and isolation…
Then please come join us in the Biblical Weight Loss Blueprint Facebook group for the upcoming “Food Freedom Workshop” Sunday Nov 28 at 7:30pm CST. I can’t wait to see you in there!
All righty. I know a biblical approach is needed because when we aren’t in alignment with who God says we are, we are susceptible to the enemy’s lies, either God is shaping our minds or the world is. I want to keep planting seeds that will open your heart to the idea that the Lord wants to fight this battle for you and victory is found in Jesus. So today we are talking about how feasting on God’s word daily helps us grow and nourishes our soul. Plus, I want to share three ways we can feast on God’s word.
1 Peter 1:23 says, “For you have been born again, not of seed which is perishable, but imperishable, that is through the living and abiding word of God.” So not only is the word seed itself, but the agency which conveys that seed, right? And the word of God produces life. It’s about this personal journey through His Word. Nothing quite satisfies like God himself! The deeper we dig into his word, the more satisfied we become. And it continues to nourish us long after we read it. Have you ever noticed that as you dig into the Scripture, I like to go to Bible Hub, and I like to look up the Greek and Hebrew translations. I like to really dig into those words and find out what they mean. And it’s almost like God rewrites it in different ways, relatable to my life in that moment, and it feeds me.
It continues to nourish me, even after I’ve chewed on that word, right? I’ve dug in, and I’ve chewed on that word. So like seeds need to grow with water and sunlight and soil, we need the Holy Spirit, which is like water; Jesus, which is like light; and God’s word, which is like soil. And so when we look at Psalm 119, this is really good, the whole chapter just kind of brings about the life of God’s Word.
So it says that:
God’s Word brings blessing to those who follow it.
It protects us from sinning against God.
It causes as much celebration as winning the jackpot.
It revives a weary and burnt out soul.
It brings freedom and liberty.
It brings assurance of God’s promises.
It’s more delightful than artery clogging delicacies.
It’s consistent throughout millennia and all over the world.
It provides direction in life.
It delights the believer, even in the midst of heartache.
It gives us vocabulary to praise God, when we don’t know what to say.
Have you ever thought, “I want to pray and I need to pray, but I don’t know what to pray?”
Praying scripture and God’s word is powerful. And it gives us vocabulary to know what to pray and what to say. And really, the Bible is about God, not us. His faithfulness, even when his people are not. His provision, even when situations look dire for his children. His continual work in us towards his glory. Head knowledge without love or heart is useless. That’s 1 Corinthians 13. Set a priority to grow in knowledge and worship. To grow deeper in love with HIM, so that everything you do becomes worship to Him and a way to glorify Him.
So Jesus was tempted in the wilderness. And he answered with God’s word, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.” So words of revelation. We get these as we study scripture, and God speaks to our heart. God, not food, is the source of our life. We are spirit first, then soul with body in the middle. And so even going back to that scripture, “man shall not live by bread alone,” And if bread isn’t your thing, insert the word brownies, or chocolate chips, or crackers and cheese, or wine or whatever. Man does not live by brownies alone. It brings on a whole new meaning, doesn’t it?
I want you to say to yourself next time you’re tempted to think that you can live by bread alone. Just repeat this, “I have a spirit of self control.”
“I live for God and not my next meal.”
“What do I desire more? God’s presence, or food?”
So there’s an abundance of life that lies in God’s word. Some things I had put in, as I was going through this chapter in 2019. I put because at the time I was struggling with my relationship with food. And so I’m like, “What can I do to make more time to be with God, to be in the presence of God instead of focusing on food?” And so here are two things I wrote down and maybe they’ll help you too. I put prep your meals for three days at a time and just stick to it. So if we can think ahead, plan three days worth of meals like “this is what I’m eating for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and here’s a snack in the middle,” or whatever, then I can use that extra mind space and time to spend in study and worship to the Lord. It frees up my mind from these obsessive fixating thoughts that I have about food. And should I have this and shouldn’t have that, like so much mental energy is freed up and emotional energy as well, that I can use that extra mind space to create and just spend time with the Lord. It’s so amazing!
All right, that was the first one. The second one is to pray to God and ask Him to develop my hunger for his word. Again, I think I talked about this two episodes ago. So maybe in episode 58. So maybe it was in 56, asking him to stir up a hunger in you. And so that you’ll have a deeper revelation of His Word, and a strengthening in your relationship. If you’re not feeling that hunger, if you’re feeling dry, and you’re not seeking out his word, and you’re not feeling the desire to, ASK him to develop a hunger to stir up a hunger for him.
Alright, so here are three ways that you can feast on God’s word. And this comes from Ashertiah’s book FULL: Food, Jesus and the Battle for Satisfaction. This comes from chapter 6…
1. Memorize scripture. So choose passages that are relevant to what you’re facing at the time. Sometimes we you know, you have a plan, or that might have a verse in it. Or you can get a 30 day plan for any specific month or season. And that’s fine. You can do that. If you have something to start with, pull a scripture out, pull a verse out that’s relevant to what you’re going through. Arm yourself with the sword of the Spirit by memorizing scripture, and then use it when tempted, and use it to speak truth into your life just like Jesus did. Jesus is our example. He’s our model. What did he do when he was tempted? He threw scripture back in the enemy’s face. So it’s very powerful. And you might think you can’t memorize but trust me, you can. I do this with my seven year old. If she can memorize scripture, you can memorize scripture.
Oh, I actually have kind of a little plug here, shameless plug, Bible, Scripture cards for girls, and they’re all about God’s character. There’s 30 unique cards in here so that as your daughter grows, you can use these cards to help her develop a knowing of who God is, how he works, what matters to him and who she is in him. And as you train and teach her about God and His character that she gets, she will become confident in her trust in Him. So we use these weekly memory verses, we add them to our daily prayers, we use them for daily copy work. And so you can go to the short link, which is bit.ly/godsgirlscards. And I will link that in the show notes. It’s kind of a mouthful, but they’re super sweet. They’re designed with your little girl in mind, I designed them with my little girls in mind, and they absolutely love them.
So that’s one way you can feast on God’s word is to memorize Scripture.
2. Write Scripture. The second way is to write the verse on note cards and carry it with you, you can put up sticky notes in your bathroom. And as you’re brushing your teeth, you can memorize through them. You can use them as bookmarks. You can even get temporary tattoos online. That’s kind of a neat idea. And you can use cravings as opportunities to wield that sword of the Spirit. So as you’re memorizing these, actually put them into practice, and use scripture, as your spiritual weapon, it’s so incredible.
3. Study Scripture. Then finally, the third way that you can feast on God’s word is, of course, to study it. As I mentioned, I like to dig deep into the Scripture. I like to go to Bible Hub and look at the Hebrew and the Greek words and what they mean and just focus my heart and mind on it. I ask Holy Spirit to help me and to create new revelation from this verse specific to me. I like to engage in the passage, obviously, by writing down those keywords, observations, maybe flow them together in a different pattern. And just assess the main idea. What did it mean to the original audience? This sparks transformation in your life and again, you can ask Holy Spirit to do this for you and show you how you can apply it in your life. And then turn your mind and heart towards God and worship just kind of, I like to turn on soaking music. I will play my worship playlists, and just meditate and soak that scripture into my heart and respond with that worship and that praise.
And you can even repent if you feel like that’s something that he’s calling you to do. You can give thanks, and just glorify God as you’re really studying his Word, and breaking it down. So Beloved, I hope that this episode blesses you.
Again, I would like to make sure you know about the Biblical Weight Loss Blueprint Facebook group and that you can join us there for our upcoming workshop the end of November. Everyone’s invited, it’s open to everyone.
And in the meantime, I just pray that you prosper in your health, just as your soul prospers and that you depend on the Holy Spirit of God your comforter at every turn. That you be attuned to him, that you practice stillness and listen, and that you will hear more clearly and louder as you obey. And that the Spirit just convicts you when you feel that flirt with temptation, that you practice obedience, that you wield that sword. Have a spirit that you throw scripture in the enemy’s face, that you obey as quickly as possible, and practice putting food in its proper place. Lord we just love you. We appreciate you. We thank you in Jesus name we pray, Amen.
