Hey, beloved, welcome back to the show! Are you stuck in unhealthy eating habits that you can’t seem to shake off no matter how many times you try? Your emotional and spiritual side heavily ties to your physical side and trying to focus on the physical, while ignoring the emotional and spiritual will only lead to failed weight loss efforts. So in this episode, I explain the three major mistakes you’re making with your weight loss journey and the solution you need to get past them. Listen in to learn the importance of paying attention to how your emotional manifests as physical when trying to lose weight or stopping food fixation.
Before we get into all of that though, I want to make sure you listen all the way to the end of this episode, because I just did our Food Freedom workshop this past Sunday. It was amazing! And I have replay access for you. Applications are open until Friday, December 3, and they are filling up fast, there’s only a few spots left! So I want to make sure you listen all the way to the end today and you know how to get access to the replay of the workshop.
You go to the Biblical Weight Loss Blueprint Facebook group, and you can enter in there. I’ll put the link in the show notes. But definitely make sure you listen to the end because I kind of cover some more details. All right, let’s dig in.
Let’s talk about the three major mistakes that I see most people make when trying to lose weight that is keeping them stuck in this seemingly endless cycle of overeating and then gaining and white-knuckling it to try to lose the weight only to burn out or give up when life gets hard. And if you’re making any of these mistakes, that’s okay, we’ve all been there. And that’s why you’re here listening.
MISTAKE #1: THINKING IT’S JUST A MATTER OF WILLPOWER
So the number one mistake I see people make is thinking it’s just a matter of willpower. How many of you have tried to lose weight by exerting this amazing amount of energy and willpower and then you stalled or stopped moving forward when things got overwhelming? I’m raising my hand over here, and I totally get it. Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt.
But have you ever noticed that you have so much more willpower in the morning than you do at night?
It’s because as the day goes on your willpower like a battery starts to drain and run down. Willpower is not like the Energizer Bunny. In fact, the more times you use it, the quicker it depletes. This is why it’s common when dieting to start the day on track and on point only to run out of willpower by the evening and binge late at night. By depleting our willpower reserve multiple times throughout the day and trying to do this on our own in our own strength, you have no resistance against the temptation of chips or ice cream at night. Add on stress, subconscious programming from childhood, emotional wounds and other hurts, lack of sleep or anything else that’s physically mentally or emotionally exhausting, and you can easily see where this becomes a problem.
And you’ll go back to what you’ve always done. This mysterious thing called willpower actually partners with self-control which is a fruit of the Spirit, the Holy Spirit. So the Holy Spirit as our guide takes our natural willpower – what small reserves we have and partners it with God in His supernatural resources to give us a fresh outpouring of self-control. Zachariah 4:6 says, “Not by might nor by power but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty.”
And 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” So His Holy Spirit infuses our natural with his supernatural energizing us to cross the finish line for the day. And so time after time after time, little by little we are seeing small daily victories as we’re co-creating, and walking out that victory with God. Not in our own strength, but with the Lord’s help. And of course, all the glory goes to God.
Now one of the main takeaways I want you to leave with today is that we judge people, and even more, we judge ourselves, as being flawed when we fail to do things on our own, but the truth is that we were never expected to. John 15:4 “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” The key here is to partner with the Lord in helping overcome our issues long enough to see it through to fruition. Once we overcome, it becomes second nature, and we don’t have to expend as much energy trying to change our behavior. We now have a new healthy habit and it becomes automatic just like the old one.
Healthy habits come as a result of a healed heart and as a fruit of walking with the Holy Spirit. They are the fruit of standing victorious with Christ.
MISTAKE #2: IGNORING THE EMOTIONAL TRIGGERS OR REASONS WHY YOU EAT
Which brings us to mistake #2 that is keeping you stuck in this cycle and that is not addressing the triggers or emotional reasons why you eat.
The limbic system is a powerful controller in our brain! It’s the part of our brain that is constantly gathering and interpreting information. It controls bodily functions like hunger, thirst, body temperature, and breathing, and…It directs the storage and use of fat…More on that in a bit, but it’s also the emotional center of our brain, and it processes our emotions. It’s responsible for memories and arousal. It detects fear and controls mood and attitude. In other words, it controls our mindset. We have a thought, which triggers an emotion or feeling, which leads to a response or action, and over time these thoughts, feelings, and actions, so this cycle creates our mindset which shapes our beliefs and our behaviors.
Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Emotions are great indicators, but they are terrible masters. That’s why we are commanded to take every thought captive and test it.
2 Corinthians 10:5 “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Not all of our thoughts are our own. There’s our voice that creates our thoughts, God’s voice, and the enemy’s. And we need to take captive the thoughts that oppose what we know to be true about God.
When our thinking is clouded and our emotions are running the show, we lose sight of God’s will for our lives. When we are fixated on food and not on Jesus, we are too close to our problems and can’t see the forest for the trees. When we don’t desire God and His good, pleasing, and perfect plans for us, we start to doubt and let ourselves get distracted from what we are called to do. At the core, our problem isn’t really what we eat so much as WHY we eat.
And so if that speaks to you, I want to give you one more mistake.
MISTAKE #3: NOT ADDRESSING THE OTHER MECHANISMS AT PLAY BEYOND REDUCING CALORIES AND EXERCISING
One of the biggest misconceptions out there that people have about weight loss is that “if I just eat fewer calories and exercise more, then I will be able to lose the weight.” How many times have you tried to lose weight with dieting and exercise only to be discouraged by the time and effort you’re putting in, and you even end up gaining weight and having your clothes fit tighter because you simply added more muscle underneath your layers of fat? Put a 3 in the comments if this has been your experience. This only magnifies the failure rate, amplifies that self-hatred, and we end up feeling stuck and hopeless again. We give up because it seems impossible.
Now, I am not saying that nutrition and exercise don’t have their place in a healthy lifestyle, and yes, of course, the quality of our food and portions matter, but what I am saying is that calories and exercise are not the only part of the equation here and most approaches miss that there are mechanisms involved beyond low-calorie dieting and extreme physical exercise that affect our weight.
In fact, Dr. Albert Simeons, who you are going to hear a lot about in my program, observed by working with over 1000 overweight patients that “many obese patients actually gain weight on a diet which is calorie deficient for their basic needs.” Just think about that. Most obese patients who are facing life-threatening health issues, white-knuckling it with willpower like Nancy, actually GAINED weight when they drastically reduced calories.
So Dr. Simeons set out to determine the cause of this phenomenon that seemed counterintuitive and he discovered that the type of fat that is stored in the body that holds toxins and keeps them out of the bloodstream, this “obesity-causing” fat if you will, is NOT released during normal diet and exercise but instead is retained as an “emergency” energy reserve and is usually only released as a last resort in instances of severe long-term starvation.
He also found that part of that limbic system that I talked about earlier, that control center of the brain directs the storage and use of fat. He believed that resetting this control mechanism was KEY to accessing and releasing those non-essential or toxic fat stores that are only available to be burned during pregnancy or during periods of starvation.
Ok, so let’s do a little recap! Willpower alone is not going to help you feel less overwhelmed with your weight. Ignoring or dismissing your emotional triggers, thoughts, and beliefs about food are not going to “unstuck” you from this seemingly endless cycle of yo-yo dieting. And exercise and reducing calories alone without addressing the other mechanisms at play in the body, are not going to help you tap into those non-essential fat stores that’s accumulating around your hips, thighs, waist, stomach and that is killing your confidence and stealing your joy.
Now since most programs out there are only teaching you the physical side of weight loss, that is a problem because I really want you to learn how the emotional and spiritual sides play a role. That’s actually the larger part of my program. I know I’ve talked a lot about weight loss so far because that is what we all think the main problem is, but emotional will always manifest as physical whether we realize it or not, and we have to pay attention to it if we want to find lasting freedom in our relationship with food.
Healing is a process and weight is just a symptom. There is something much deeper going on inside. Feelings buried alive never die and the body keeps score. Those are actually titles of two books around this topic and although we don’t have time to go into all of my favorite books, I want to give you the resources and the vision for how I found freedom in my relationship with food, how I lost 32 pounds of toxic fat that was weighing me down, how I gained the confidence to step into my calling and own it and how I am helping others find freedom as well,
So Beloved, I am so excited! in case you missed it, I just did a food freedom workshop and I want to make sure you get access to the replay. We spent an hour together unpacking what it really takes to break free from bondage is to food and struggles with weight without exercise and even if you’ve struggled your entire life.
For many of us food has become an increasingly complex issue that causes us to feel guilty or overwhelmed or even hopeless. And if you feel defeated by your lack of self-control or overwhelmed by your weight and thoughts and longings for food, then I invite you to join the biblical weight loss blueprint where you can get access to the replay. There’s actually some time-sensitive offers in here. And so I want you to go over there right away. It’s the Biblical Weight Loss Blueprint Facebook group. And I just give you a glimpse inside like an aerial view of my Biblical Weight Loss Blueprint, which is my 12-week signature program that I’m launching in January 2022.
It’s a faith-based format, of course, it’s comprehensive, it’s holistic in nature. We are body, spirit and soul. And so in this program, we address all three and I go through those three cords, right “a strand of three cords is not easily broken.” I go through each of those three cords. We have the fast and detox for the physical weight loss portion, a biblically-based food freedom curriculum for the spiritual piece, and finally, personal inner healing sessions for the heart and soul work that is so crucial for lasting freedom.
Weight is just a symptom, Beloved, and it’s not about the weight yet, it’s not NOT about the weight. I know if you’re anything like me, the weight has been in the way and you know that it truly is not a part of you and you’re ready to chisel away the pieces that do not belong to you in the first place. Those souvenirs from hell that you’ve collected along your whole entire life, ready to just release it and let it go. Losing weight is really just the icing on the cake in this program. Yes, you will be losing on average between 10 to 15% of your body weight, which for most people is about 20 to 25 pounds. But more importantly, you will discover the joy of living free from food fixation. By experiencing deeper satisfaction in Christ, you will find healing from the inside out and that you no longer need this extra weight to carry around because you’ve found true healing. It no longer needs to burden you. And you will finally feel comfortable and confident in your own skin to be able to step into the fullness of what God has for you.
This is a completely free workshop. We have to fight our battle, this spiritual battle, right? It’s not against flesh and blood. We need to overcome the lies with truth. And I even have a special guest who shared her experience of the 12-week program. You get to hear firsthand from her, her results, and her takeaways. And also if you want to watch the replay right away, you’ll get access to the BETA pricing of this program that launches in January. You have until December 3 to get your application in. Yes, there’s an application process. This program is not for everyone. And so we want to make sure that you are ready and that you are physically able to go through the program. And so if you are ashamed to work out in front of others if you can’t stop obsessing about food or binge eating or binge drinking if you avoid the mirror because of what you see in the reflection or avoid family photos because you don’t want to look at yourself in pictures. I totally get it. Beloved. I understand that self-hatred with your body, that shame, and that cycle of fear and anxiety in social situations. I would love nothing more than for you to be set free from the bondage of food fixation, binge eating, and loneliness and isolation that comes along with that. So please, while you can, join the Biblical Weight Loss Blueprint Facebook group, catch the replay, it should be right in the group, and then do the application process if it’s something that resonates with you.
We have that open until December 3, and then doors closed December 3, as we kind of go through the applications over the weekend and then we let anybody know that was okay and qualified to come into the program. We let them know by Monday, December 6th. All right, Beloved, I pray that you prosper in your health just as your soul prospers. Until next time.
