Hi, Beloved. Welcome back to another episode. I’m so excited to be here with you today. We’re talking tangible tips and practical tools for emotional resiliency to help you move from chaos to clarity, and from stressed to thankful and thriving in your day. But before we jump into all of that, I want to share some real examples and success stories for emotional health and essential oils. It’s so easy to think that essential oils are just pretty smells, but when you harness the divine intelligence and medicinal power of pure and potent essential oils create just the way God designed them so no synthetics or chemical manipulations, the results are astounding!
OK, so I want to talk about something that many of struggle with and I’ve personally struggled with myself for several years. Anxiety + Overwhelm! I can usually handle a lot and it seems like I don’t pay attention to how stressful things get it’s already too late. And It’s already too much. Or until I’m screaming and losing it at my kids or my husband. I literally just rage purged my freezer last week because I was tired of things falling on me.
Part of it is not taking care of things in an organized or timely manner, part of it is not everyone in my home appreciating a good system and just piling things on top of each other or take a “not my responsibility” approach, and part of it is my reactions.
So what I want to talk about is The Power Of Aroma On Your Overwhelmed Emotions And Anxious Minds, PLUS I’m going to share My TOP 5 Essential Oils For Mental Health And Emotional Resiliency because we have to find a way to manage our emotions in a healthy way! Our freezers are going to get full, our kids are going to wear us down with demands, our spouses are going to get in our personal space when they work from home. And we have tools we can use to avoid the frazzle and keep our emotions in check.
Let’s first talk about the power of aroma… I don’t just want to hear that something works, I want to know the how and why behind it. It’s just how God made me so
THE POWER of AROMA
One of the most well-studied areas of aroma research is the effect of smell on EMOTIONS and MOOD.
The science shows that simply inhaling the AROMA of an ESSENTIAL OIL is effective for calming nervous or anxious feelings in a variety of settings.
Here are some examples — Peppermint essential oil was studied for its ability to reduce daytime sleepiness. Participants were exposed to the aroma of Peppermint oil while spending time in a darkened room in conditions that favor an increase in daytime sleepiness. The results were that Peppermint oil did indeed REDUCE drowsiness in the participants.
In another study, 200 patients ranging in age from 18 to 77 were exposed to the odor of orange or lavender essential oil. Results showed that compared to a control group, both the orange and lavender aroma reduce anxiety and improved the mood of the patients awaiting dental procedures.
One more example is when a specific blend of Floral, Citrus, Tree and Mint Oils was combined for a synergistic effect in a randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover clinical trial with 60 participants (some as young as age 12) in a stress-induced environment showed higher test scores, lower heart rate, and lower perceived stress while the blend was being diffused. Which basically showed how they were better able to adapt to the environment around them over those in the control group 😱 I need to diffuse this blend more!
LEMON studies show that lemon oil is antidepressant (Komori et al 1995) and invigorating (Komori et al 2006). It also reduces anxiety and boosts both serotonin and dopamine, those feel-good hormones.
BERGAMOT has been shown to:
And that is just the tip of the iceberg! I love how we can scientifically validate this stuff. God is not against science – science can validate what we already know is God’s creativity and goodness. True science, not bought and paid for science.
So we can tell just by these examples that aromas can be stimulating or relaxing and are connected to our emotions but even more so they can evoke physical responses. I’m a huge advocate of not just looking at outward physical states or symptoms and looking at the root cause which many times point back to emotions. Emotional will always manifest as physical and we have to pay attention to these physical signs and look back to how can we support ourselves emotionally.
SO HOW DOES THIS WORK HEIDI?
Take your fingers and pinch right above the bridge of their nose. Right under your fingers is your olfactory nerve. Ok, you can take your fingers off now!
This nerve – this olfactory nerve, sends messages to the limbic system in your brain, which in turn sends messages to your entire body. It’s not actually just the SMELL that is at work here, it’s also the frequency. One of my favorite authors in Kingdom mentors is Ian Clayton and he explains it this way “when your nose hairs pick up the vibration translated as the smell, the small hairs in your nose don’t actually register the smell — they pick up the frequency. And it’s the vibration of that frequency that’s telling your brain and translating the scent so your body and the emotional center of your brain can connect with it.
PURE essential oils carry a frequency in it. PURE oil has measures of frequency inside it that affect the human body. Just as Jesus was given gold which Ian suggests is actually the balm of Gilead, frankincense, and myrrh to use for health, we can use these goodies too! Frankincense has one of the highest frequencies of any naturally occurring oil in its pure form – remember everything goes back to PURITY – we don’t want synthetics and fake oils in our system. And so each essential oil has a resonant frequency that can help tremendously with your health and well-being of course in your physical body but also with your emotional state.
Sometimes people think it’s hokey to say oils could affect the body just by smelling them, but let me illustrate. When you go to the dentist and need to be sedated, they don’t give you a pill or a shot. Many times, they offer you laughing gas and ask you to breathe through a mask. In as little as 30 seconds of breathing the synthetic compounds through the mask the gas triggers your olfactory nerve and system sending signals to your body to help you relax and even feel euphoric. It’s one of the fastest ways to access the brain.
This happens exactly the same way with natural compounds found in essential oils. When we breathe in natural compounds from essential oils, they again hit our olfactory nerve and the olfactory nerve sends signals to the limbic system which in turn sends signals to the rest of our body. This can also happen with essential oils in as little as 30 seconds. There are a few ways to use essential oils Aromatically. You can breathe them from your hands – drop in palms, rub, cup over nose and inhale, use them in a diffuser, or breathe them right from the bottle.
Wild Orange is one of my favorite oils to first introduce to people because it has natural compounds that help with stress and depression; studies are showing it is sometimes more effective than taking an anti-depressant. I take Wild Orange with me wherever I go!
Is anyone stressed or moody lately? Wild orange is really good if you are having anger snaps right now.
The limbic system that I mentioned earlier is the part of the brain that processes our emotions and it can only be accessed by the sense of smell, that’s why they call it aroma – therapy. So this is the quickest way to affect your mood. It’s also the part of the brain that’s responsible for memories and arousal. It detects fear, controls bodily functions, and perceives sensory information (among other things) – so this is pretty powerful stuff here! Wild orange is a great one to diffuse to create a happy, healthy environment.
Running oils through a diffuser will also help purify the air and opening up the lungs because it’s going to affect the entire space. Everyone in the room is basically breathing it in and it can help destroy those airborne pathogens.
Intriguing new research has also helped us recognize that the benefits of AROMA extend far beyond just EMOTIONAL regulation as we actually have smell receptor sites ALL over our insides from our skin to our heart, liver, brain and even sperm possess an astounding number of olfactory receptors. So if you think you “smell” only from your nose, think again! Isn’t God so amazing the way he designs things? It blows my mind!
And I always get the question I lost my sense of smell do I can I still benefit from using essential oils and as I cleared just explained, the answer is yes!
We know from all the research that AROMA influences the limbic region of the BRAIN, the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland which affects hormones involved in the regulation of BLOOD PRESSURE, HUNGER and THIRST signals, THYROID function, SLEEP cycles, production of sexual HORMONES, and MEMORY, among other things.
And so AROMA has a powerful influence on neurochemistry throughout the body, and, in turn, our emotional state.
